Cassandra Anderson "Cass" is a teacher in her late thirties- married with an adoring husband and living in a quiet suburb. Cass has had a fairly rough past two years with the passing of her mother who was diagnosed with early onset dementia at the age of 44. Cass becomes fearful that the dementia will be hereditary and begins noticing she is forgetting things people have told her, going out shopping without her wallet, and losing her car in a parking garage. One stormy night she is driving home from drinks with co-workers and despite the warning from her husband she takes a back road to her neighborhood known for its dangers during storms. She sees a woman in a car possibly broken down- she pulls over and then decides the woman is probably waiting for someone and then she proceeds to head home. The next morning the local news announces this woman’s brutal murder in her car on blackwater lane. Cass becomes sick with guilt because she didn’t stop and help her. Days go by and she becomes more forgetful- inviting friends over for dinner with no recollection of inviting them, missing lunch dates with her best friend Rachel, and ordering things from shops and online channels without any memory of doing it. Cass starts getting silent phone calls multiple times a day while her husband is away at work. The paranoia comes to a front when she swears she sees the “murder weapon” outside her kitchen window. Her husband, Matthew, convinces her to see a doctor. The doctor diagnoses her with stress and prescribes a medication that completely knocks her senseless however she finds herself unable to cope without it. One night- during a dinner with Rachel she confides to Rachel all of her fears, memory lapses, and reliance on the medication. After their dinner- Cass finds a burner phone in the restaurant with the answer to all of her paranoia, memory lapses, and fears. What could possibly be on the phone? Read this book and find out about the astonishing twist at the end of this story that NO ONE saw coming.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and flew through it trying to figure out what the hell was happening to Cass and who could have possibly committed that horrific murder. This was a quick and easy “who done it”perfect for October. B.A. Paris' first book is called “Behind Closed Doors” which I read a couple years ago and it was AMAZING. She is so good at throwing unexpected twists in the story that will have your mouth dropping. I highly recommend picking that one up if you are a fan of psychological thrillers.
